For some, leaving far away from home can be a daunting task. We're so accustomed to our surroundings that often times it's hard to detach from them. We give ourselves the most lame excuses in the world to refrain from a different scenery. But I've found out that a lot of us don't confide enough in our ability to experience a new part of ourselves that we have yet to see. It's equivalent to the new employee on the job. You're stuck between showing your coworkers that you're competent of your duties, versus your ego of "being too cocky" or showing a sense of arrogance. Here are some ways that can help you not only get into the habit of traveling, but also enjoy the physical and mental benefits of it.
1. Maintain A Positive Attitude
Let's be real here: The traveling process (especially by air) can be a bit irritating. From the ear-clogging, the confined seating, and even the turbulence that occurs every now and then. Try to keep a receptive mind and remain optimistic. Focus on your plans (if any) and if possible, while flying, try to make new plans while in a relaxed mood. Doing this will take your mind off anything negative and you'll feel more at ease.
2. Traveling Divulges Your Strengths
As humans, we're conditioned to preoccupy ourselves with our own flaws. We barely take heed to what we're good at unless someone or something else reminds us of it. Seeing different parts of the world where you can directly interact with the existing cultures and activities, you may find yourself engaging in a new healthy skill that you weren't familiar with. For the most part, it takes a different setting or surrounding to measure our strengths while also exposing our weaknesses.
3. Traveling Can Exploit Our Weaknesses
Although this may seem like a bad thing, it actually is therapeutic. Common anxieties such as fear of one's perception or lack of competence can all be managed with just a clear and direct understanding of why we possess these fears. Going to one of your dream islands or fancy destinations has a way of having us subconsciously challenge ourselves giving that we're somewhere comfortable and refreshing. Playing a sport that's relative to your destination for instance, can boost your confidence in the long run. It's similar to restarting a new life in a new place. Therefore, we have better control of our weaknesses in life.
4. Sync Your Thoughts With Desires
It's hard not to succumb to irrationality in life. A lot of times during our vacation period, what prevents us to from doing what we enjoy is what we implant in our minds. Either we underthink or overthink, and usually it's something very trivial. For the most part, traveling is driven by your desire to explore and witness new atmospheres even if it's close to what you're already use to. We then have to use the logical portion of our minds to invest in some active planning, such as preparing for a special dinner arrangement, or an explorative tour event to get the best fulfillment of your journey. These tasks enables us self-assurance in handling everyday tasks and even occasional stressful decision making when you return home or at work
5. Assertiveness
Traveling forces us to become more decisive. We tend to take more initiative and making judgments quickly, even when we're not prepared to. Personally, I found this to be true. Almost every time I go to Puerto Rico, I encounter this. Usually it's between some ATW beach trail or a walking tour that we take along the town. I chose ATW every time! This also builds confidence in our ability to think on our toes. Should we make this a habit in making snap judgments? Of course not, but remember, you're on vacation and every decision is a win/win situation!
